Happy Trails, Gourmet Food and Good Company - Cynthia Armour

Thanks to Debbie and Steve Tinmouth, the Ganaras- ka Forest Horse Club held a thoroughly enjoyable ride from their farm “Eastfork” on July 21st. For some, the adventure extended the entire weekend. Six horses and campers arrived Friday night and the rest came Saturday. With two marked loops (7 and 11 miles respectively) there was something for everyone, including a very welcome water truck on the longer trail. In all, twenty-two riders took in relaxing scenic roads, easy open trails, and for the not-so-faint-hearted, “death valley bypass”. A small group of intrepids went

out for another quiet walk for an hour that evening.

Club members have dubbed my fired (or as our hostess described “dis- graced”) ex-police-horse as “The Brockasaurus” due to his formidable stature. He and I rolled in on Saturday evening. Although I’d missed the sanctioned event due to another commitment I was really grateful for the camp- ing option and invitation to another ride on Sunday. Nine horses stayed that night and the evening events were a delight.

The Morleys and Free- mans, who’ve trailered their horses many miles through the States and Canada, had driven from the London area to enjoy the whole weekend.

Once I’d got Brock settled and pitched my tent, I joined the revelry. Terry Morley treated us all to his culinary expertise with the most amaz- ing fresh deep dish peach pie baked over coals...I can still taste the sweet and tart, slightly smoky flavours...deli- cious! We had a small camp- fire in a sandy corner of the paddock, loads of stories, cowboy songs and lots of laughter ...accompanied by a variety of beverages, includ- ing champagne, for the most refined.

After Sunday breakfast (with another delicacy of Terry’s baked biscuits) four of us had a two-hour ride. Debbie guided us as we wound our way through their farm and neighbouring prop-

erties before the sun got too hot. Brock and I had such fun and I admire the effort that goes into creating and main- taining those trails (and promise to offer my services next Spring). The finale was riding straight through some of the healthier corn I’ve seen this year that even towered over my 17.1 steed - I felt like I was in Field of Dreams. This is just one example of the ben- efits of membership to the GFHC where we can enjoy the generosity of those who live on or near the forest. Thanks to everyone who volunteer their time and talent making these rides happen.

Extra special kudos to Debbie Tinmouth and Bob Coleman (another of our gen- erous members along with his wife Michelle who shared their farm for our early bird ride). Bob and Debbie are the club’s professional trailblazers who marked another route at the last minute for Saturday’s ride after loggers closed a trail. What’s next?
