West Lorne was the place to be on Saturday, July 21 for the annual Cactus, Cattle & Cowboys festival!


The firefighters’ breakfast was well attended as always. Next door to the fire hall, the West Lorne


Library book sale was in full swing at 9:00 AM with books flying off shelves for a real bargain. Also at the library, children wanting to experience “A Day in the Life of a Pioneer” enjoyed several fun and eye-opening hands-on activities


offered.


The noon parade did not dis- appoint. Spectators who lined the route saw horses and riders who were dressed to impress. Partici- pating in the parade were such hon- oured guests included West Elgin Mayor Bernie Wiehle, MP Joe Preston and MPP Jeff Yurek. After the parade, riders trotted off to enjoy their trail rides while the dignitaries joined in the festivities in the Park. Miller Park proved once more to be an inviting venue for the vendors to display their wares. Among the 47 different booths, shoppers could find jewelry, artwork or leather goods, obtain tourism or health-related infor- mation, or learn more about 4- H. There were also booths feed- ing attendees.


The day included browsing horse breed displays and watching educational demos by experts on Parelli Natural Horsemanship, Tennessee Walkers, Rocky Mountain Horses and Sari Disability. That was topped off by watching Dog Agility trials. Kids were kept busy and having fun in the petting zoo, checking out the horses and ponies, or keeping cool at the splash pad.


The morning musical enter- tainment was provided by West Elgin’s own Back Porch Gospel. Competitors in the “Battle of the Bands”

then took centre stage in the after- noon. The winner was Michael Warren from St. Thomas who will now be going on to Boot Hill in early August. To round out the day’s events, last year’s winner, “76 South,” provided a free evening concert that was enjoyed by all.
