HURRICANE DISASTER INFORMATION


TERMS TO KNOW


Hurricane Watch - Hurricane may threaten coastal and inland areas within the next 48 hours. Hurricane Warning - Hurricane is expected to strike within 24 hours. The warning will include an assessment


of flood danger and recommended emergency procedures.


Hurricane Watch • Monitor the radio and TV. Listen for weather reports and emergency announcements. • Evacuation plans. Review plans with family members and stay in touch. • Fuel the car/truck. Be sure you have a full tank. • Marine Craft. Make preparations to moor, anchor and store your boat. • Check your disaster kit. Put items together in one place for easy access. • Emergency supplies. Refresh disaster kit supplies such as batteries, water, and food. Stock up on non-perishable food items and sanitation supplies.


• Gather valuables. Place valuables and important papers in waterproof containers. • Special needs. Check that you have adequate baby supplies, prescriptions, special medicines or foods, etc., on hand.


• Check cash on hand. Get extra money in case electronic banking is unavailable. • Secure outdoor items. Store inside or secure all lawn furniture, garbage cans, toys, etc., which could become deadly missiles in high winds.


• Utilities. Locate the main turnoffs for electricity, water and gas. • Ready for use hurricane shutters or plywood for windows. • Animal safety. Make arrangements for your pets/animals to be taken care of. They may not be allowed at any emergency shelter.


Hurricane Warning • Follow official instructions. Listen for weather reports and emergency announcements on TV and radio.


• Transportation. If you do not have a car, arrange ahead of time for transportation should you have to evacuate.


• Secure the house. - Turn refrigerators/freezers to coldest settings. - Bring in outside furniture, lower TV antenna, clear property of all loose objects. - Turn off electricity to pool, and add extra chlorine. - Cover windows and other openings with plywood or hurricane shutters.


• Load car. Put disaster kit, records, valuables, important papers into your vehicle. • Be prepared to evacuate. Gather your family. Before you evacuate: turn off electricity, gas and water service to your house.


• Evacuation. If ordered to evacuate, obey immediately. Take your hurricane evacuation kit. Let friends and neighbors know where you are going.


Portable Disaster Kit


• Food - nonperishable. • Water - one gallon per person per day for drinking.


• Eating and cooking utensils (such as can opener, knife).


• Toilet articles and sanitary supplies. • Medication - prescriptions (two-week supply).


• First aid kit. 138


• Portable radio, TV. • Flashlight, batteries, candles. • Bedding - such as sleeping bags, blankets, pillows.


• Clothing. • Portable ice chest. • Light weight chairs/cots. • Personal items, including books and toys. • Important papers, valid I.D.
