SPICA CAST: A cast, made mostly of plaster, which is used to immobilize the shoulder or the hip joint and which extends over a considerable portion of the trunk as well as over the extremity. SPINAL FUSION OPERATION: A bone operation which results in strengthening of the spinal column by obliteration of the joints between some of the vertebrae. SPONDYLOLISTHESIS: A defect in a vertebra between the pedicle and the lamina with forward displacement of the upper facet and the vertebra above. SPONDYLOLYSIS:

PRESPONDYLOLISTHESIS. SUBLUXATION: An incomplete or partial dislocation. SUPINATION: A turning of the hand so that the palm faces upward. The opposite of pronation. SUPRAXLAVICULAR FOSSA: Depression on either side of the neck reaching down behind the clavicle. SYNOVIUM: The lining of a joint. TALIPES: The generic term for clubfoot. TENDON: The strong fibrous cord or “leader” which connects a muscle to the bone which it is designated to move. TENDOVAGINAL: Pertaining to the sheath about a tendon. THERAPY: Treatment. THORACIC: Pertaining to the thorax or chest. TIBIA: The shin-bone. The larger of the two bones of the leg. TONUS: The slight, continuous contraction of muscle, which in skeletal muscles aid in the maintenance of posture and the return of blood to the heart. TORSION: Twisting. TORTICOLLIS: Wryneck; a contracted state of the cervical muscles producing twisting of the neck and an unnatural position of the head. TRACTION: A pulling force, often provided by weights hung over the end of the bed and attached to some part of the body by means of tape, etc. TROCHANTER: Either of the two bony processes below the neck of the femur. ULNA: One of the two long bones of the forearms, extending from the elbow to wrist. The ulna is on the same side of the extremity as the little finger. VALGUS: Bent outward; away from the midline. VARUS: Bent inward; toward the midline.

ACCEPTANCE: Occurs when an applicant for insurance receives his policy from the company and, in the case of general insurance, pays the premium. AGENCY: When one person acts on behalf of another person, an agency is created with the first person being the agent and the second person being the principal. ASSIGNEE: A person to whom policy rights are assigned in whole or in part by the original policy owner. (LE) ASSIGNMENT: Transfer by the policy owner of legal rights or interest in the policy contract to a third party. CONTRACT OF INSURANCE: The contract whereby an insurer agrees to indemnify an insured for losses, provide other benefits, or render services to or on behalf of the insured. COUNTERSIGNATURE LAW: Refers to the laws which most states have requiring that any insurance contract in a state by countersigned by a representative of the insurer located in that state. DECLARATION: A formal specifying of the facts constituting the plaintiff’s cause of action against the defendant. FINANCED INSURANCE: Payment of insurance premiums, in whole or in part, with funds derived from borrowing, usually from the case value of the policy. GUEST LAW: Some states have legislation which restricts the rights of a guest to collect from the driver of an automobile he is riding in on the grounds of ordinary negligence. INTERVENING CAUSE: Negligence may be avoided or reduced if it can be shown that an intervening cause broke the uninterrupted chain of events required to establish a proximate cause. LAST CLEAR CHANCE: A doctrine that liability may attach to a person who, immediately before an accident, had a last clear chance to avoid it and did not. LEGAL LIABILITY: Liability under the law as opposed to liability arising from contracts or agreements. LIEN: A claim against property which then serves as security for the payment of that claim.
