port it, and I’m sure it must have weighed 800 to 1,000 pounds,” says Adams with a laugh. “It’s not the pret- tiest piece on the floor, but everyone obviously loves it.” What’s so special about this particu-
lar piece? “Members know first-class equipment when they use it,” says Adams, who cites genius design and indestructibility as two of its outstand- ing features. His members also appre- ciate the advantages that selectorized equipment offers.
“Because you just pull the pin to
bump up the weight, it’s quicker and more convenient than loading plates,” says Adams. “And for new members who are just starting out it’s less intim- idating and there’s less to remember.”
Cables or weight stacks? “Some people called for the death of
selectorized equipment when cable- based resistance training systems ar- rived on the club scene many years ago,” says Andre Leitert, owner of National Fitness Products. But according to Leitert, selectorized
equipment remains an important line in full service gyms. “It allows for safer and easier weight- bearing exercises,” explains Leitert,
