they start on grass and finish on corn.” Chickens are also raised
on the farm. They are fed as naturally as possible, using a floorless mobile trailer that is moved daily. The chickens can scratch around on the ground for insects, and they get some corn and grit for digestion. Dawn and Daniel do much
of the day-to-day farm work, while John handles business and marketing. John’s time is divided between the farm and his wife Natasha Baihly’s family business, River and Trail Outfit- ters.
The farm is located on the
historic Snodgrass Tavern farmstead near Hedgesville. The family home was built around 1742 as a one-room log cabin; stone and frame addi- tions transformed it over the years. It was used from the 1760s through the 1850s as a tavern and lodging house. On
the main road halfway between Martinsburg and Berkeley Springs, it was also known as Halfway House. George Wash- ington wrote of staying there in 1784 on his way to Berkeley Springs. Beef is sold in bulk or by
the pound in a small, USDA- inspected shop on the farm in a historic structure that once served as slave quarters. That banked stone-and-wood build- ing also held a blacksmith shop, cellar, and icehouse. Hours are by appointment. Enjoy their beef at The De- vonshire restaurant in Shep- herdstown and the Country Inn in Berkeley Springs. This year, they will be selling
meat at Shepherdstown’s Mor- gan Grove Market. Daniel and his girlfriend, Jess Royson, will be handling sales each Satur- day. For information, see www.
