am failing, sometimes a couple of hours in a rocking chair are enough to make me admit what I already knew. Sometimes it takes a day or two to figure out what it is that’s bothering me. This time was no different. A few days later I sat at the

range was another turkey, and once again I was being weighed and measured. I recognized the bird. An ex-
tra bubbly waddle and a miss- ing tail feather let me know this was the third bird that had walked away a few days earlier. This time, however, he stepped from brush and walked into range in full strut. He dragged his wings through the spring-
time grass, leaving a wiggly trail in the morning dew. He danced in circles showing his fan from every angle and hummed the spit and drum of a strutting turkey. I had made muster with this
turkey, and had been offered more than just a shot at one of nature’s greatest spectacles. When the show was done he stood straight up and looked
directly at me, almost surprised that I’d not accepted his offer- ing.
I’m certain he understood as
he walked away that all I really wanted was his approval, and that I was genuinely apprecia- tive of his extraordinary show. And that for now, this was enough. A lifetime of turkey hunting has taught me many lessons.
