Well it seems that the sun is trying to shine more and more each day. Finally!!! T is is a great time to talk solar panels. Solar is a great way
to help you supplement your 12v battery power requirement. Solar panels are measured in watts and the charge rate is measured in amps. Solar panels for RV’s generally range in size from 50 watt producing up to 3 amp charge to 130 watt with an 8 amp charge rate. T e charge rate is based on optimal conditions. T e panel must be clean; the sun directly overhead, etc. Of
course if you are parked in the shade and the sun is on an angle your charge rate may be minimal. Most solar panel kits come with a charge controller, wiring
from the solar panel to the charge control regulator and all mounting hardware. Charge controllers range in size from 20 to 30 amps. T e higher the amp rating on charge controller the more expansion panels you can add giving you increased charging power. Some charge controller will allow up to 500 watts of solar charging power! Solar charging systems work great with either two 12-volt or two or more 6-volt batteries. T e more reserve power capacity the better. Some questions you
should be asking when making your purchase decision are: What is the warranty of the panel? What is the warranty of the regulator? How durable is the panel against hail? Do the panels come with weatherproof connectors? Is the panel CSA approved? Ask your dealer about the installation of the panel. Does
your installer wire direct to battery or do they wire to some other point in the 12v electrical system? Going direct to the battery is the best way to avoid any charging power loss. Well folks, looks like spring to me. Just recently de-winterized my RV and fi red up the Harley, so it must be time. Every spring I receive numerous enquiries for a general spring
service special. As there are numerous diff erences between each type of RV, it is always diffi cult to determine each requirement for each type of RV. Below, I have listed some items that should be done and or checked each spring. Having these basic/general items addressed at your local dealership each spring, will ensure you of a great experience in your RV this season. · Have your LP system checked. T is should include a leak test, a working pressure test, and a lock up test, performed by a licensed RV technician.
· Have your appliances serviced. Any appliance that is a direct vent to the exterior of your RV, is prone to dust, insects, and other types of contaminants.
· Have your LP & CO detectors checked. · Change your batteries in your smoke detector. · Have your RV battery thoroughly inspected as well as your charging system to the battery from the converter and from the tow vehicle.
· Have your trailer brake system checked. Brakes should be checked for operation as well as set-up as they are not self- adjusting like your car. Ensure that your emergency braking switch is operating correctly.
· Have your wheel bearings checked. · Have your tires infl ated to the manufacturer specifi cations. · Check your roof sealant. Even though you had it checked in the fall, have it rechecked in the spring. You must realize that it is probably six months ago you put it into storage. Ensure your dealer also inspects your window and moulding seals.
· Have your air conditioner checked for tightness. Your dealer will drop down the interior ceiling assembly and ensure that the four mounting bolts are secure; they do come loose and this will cause a water leak. Watch for my monthly feature on CFJC TV Midday, airing the last Friday of each month.
