Moose Parade Marshall

headed through Ottawa and continued on toward Sudbury. As we had missed some of the sights on Manitoulin Island earlier, we took the time to go back and tour around for a couple of days. By this time in September a lot of the tourist facilities were closing up and some campgrounds and Welcome Centres were not open. As we were motoring along the north shore of Lake Superior,

enjoying the many glimpses of the water through the trees, we came across a very unusual sight: a moose leading a parade. At this point on the highway there was a metal barricade on the eastbound side, which shielded a high dropoff into a river and the westbound lane was right next to a vertical cliff base. T e moose had obviously started heading east down the road, but couldn’t get off it. He was just trotting toward us at a good pace, followed by several cars and trucks who were

patiently following along. We titled the picture Moose Parade Marshall. Aſt er seven days of crossing Ontario, we picked up the pace

and headed toward home. Headwinds were strong every day and our Cummins-powered Dodge had no problem pushing through the wind, but the fuel economy dropped from our best of 20 mpg down to 12 or so. Our camper is an eleven and a half foot Lance model 1121 with a slideout. A very comfortable unit, but like pushing a barn door when the headwinds are over 70 kph. We just put the hammer down for three days to get back into BC and out of the wind. T e rest of the tour home was through the Kootenays and Arrow Lakes region where the nights were cool but the days sunny and crisp. Back home in Vernon on September 19. A total of 17,000 kms and 54 days for our adventure. k
