Take An RV Trip To The

Cdn. East Coast BY VIC PORCHER

For a few years, my wife Pat and I had dreamed of making a camping trip to Newf o u n d l a n d and the rest of the east coast of our beautiful country, Canada. Aſt er coming

home from our spring trip to Arizona, Nevada, and California in

2010, we decided that in 2011 we would make our big trip and take a look at the rest of Canada. Our general plan was to visit family and friends in BC and Alberta and then head to Saskatchewan and do a little genealogical research into Pat’s family history in the Esterhazy area. T en we’d do a small detour down into South Dakota for more research into Vic’s family history as well. Aſt er getting back into Canada at Sault Ste. Marie, we would stay in our own country for the remainder of the trip. We leſt home on July 28th, 2011 and headed up to Quesnel,

BC to spend a few days with family and friends. August 2nd found us on our way to Edmonton, AB via the Yellowhead Highway, through the magnifi cent Rocky Mountain trench. T e drive through the Rockies was great as we had blue skies and could see the top of Mt. Robson glowing white in the sunshine. We travel through the Yellowhead Pass frequently and this is a rare sight. Aſt er several days of visiting friends and family, we headed east of Edmonton and camped at a little community campsite near New Sarepta. At 3:15 a.m. a blast of thunder from a lightning strike just a few hundred feet away woke all three of us up, the third in the party being our dog Gizmo, a well-seasoned traveler. T e thunder and rain for the next 2 ½ hours didn’t let any of us sleep much. For the next three days as we trekked across Alberta and

Saskatchewan we kept catching up to that same storm, usually later in the aſt ernoon, then drove through it and had it catch up to us aſt er we were camped. T e nights were quite noisy as we have a metal roof on our camper, so the rain makes a fair amount of racket.
