Pat’s research went well and we headed for Winnipeg,

Manitoba. Using the bypass, we missed the city and pointed ourselves straight south down through the Dakotas. Vic’s great-grandfather had homesteaded a piece of land just west of Brookings SD in the 1800’s. We managed to stand on the same ground where his house once stood and found the family cemetery plot in a remote area off the highway just a few miles away. With most of the family history research done for the time

being, we meandered northeast through Minnesota and found ourselves travelling along the south shore of Lake Superior. As soon as we found a nice pullout to rest for a while, we stopped and went down to the water’s edge to have a look. It took a bit of mental wrangling to convince ourselves that this was fresh water we were looking at. T ere is no shoreline visible across the lake. It looks just like the Pacifi c Ocean from this point of view. A day and a half of driving on scenic, but somewhat rough two lane roads along the lake brought us to Sault Ste. Marie and we had to pay a $6 toll to cross a rickety old iron bridge to get back into our home country! T e view from the bridge was interesting however, as we were crossing over a part of the St. Lawrence Seaway System. Seeing locks and canals like this was a fi rst for us. Neither of us had been east of Alberta for over 40 years. We camped near the town of Massey ON in a nice Provincial

Park with a scenic waterfall and river view close by. One of the planned highlights for the trip came up the next day. Travelling south from Espanola, ON we drove onto Manitoulin Island to take a ferry across Georgian Bay on Lake Huron. Aſt er spending the night in a nice private campground about a kilometre from the ferry slip, we arrived early the next morning for the ride over to Tobermory. Much of this area has been inhabited by non-natives for well over 400 years. Lots of history to explore along the way. T e weather was good, the ferry trip okay but that’s where the good day planned fell apart. We had planned to go to a campground very near the ferry dock and just spend the day relaxing. T e campground was nothing like its ads so we kept going to try and fi nd another one. Well, the scenic drive we thought we were taking was nowhere near the water and eventually turned into a very narrow, tree-lined gravel road for several miles. Eventually we ended up at a place called Sauble Beach, but camped a few blocks from the water. Aſt er a long nap to get over the stress of the day, we walked several minutes to the beach only to fi nd that dogs were not allowed, so we had to take turns holding Gizmo while the other walked out to the beach to have a look. T e beach was very nice, wide and sandy, but very commercialized with volleyball nets one aſt er the other. I guess that’s what Ontario is all about: too many people for the limited recreational space. T e campground we were in had well over 700 sites and we were in a spot in- between permanent park model trailers. It’s like being in a condo development, yuk! Can’t wait to get to the Maritimes. As we’re fans of muscle cars from the 60’s and 70’s, we had

planned the timing of this trip around a major car show in New Hamburg, ON. We had managed to arrange to get a spot in a local campground right next to friends of ours from Ft. St. John, BC who were there for the same show. Two nights there
