Plans unveiled to transform school
ST Augustine’s Academy in Maidstone is to undergo a multi- million pound transformation. Plans are about to be submit-
ted to the borough council which will see major improve- ments to facilities and the con- struction of a teaching block. The investment in the acad-
emy, in the former Astor of Hever buildings off Oakwood Road, will be a combination of new buildings and extensive re- furbishment to provide students with a modern, high-quality fa- cility, according to a spokesman for KCC. The proposed building would link with the newer part of the

school, built in 2005, to provide teaching facilities for science, music and drama.Akitchen and dining area will be included. A series of buildings that are
in a poor condition will be de- molished to make way for hard play areas and the west block is going to be refurbished to house computer technology. Representatives from the school, KCC, the Woodard Academies Trust and Willmott Dixon Construction have been meeting students and their par- ents to discuss the proposals. If the plans get the go-ahead,
work is due to commence on site in September.
Bag it – then bin it! MOTORISTS are being urged to carry plastic bags in which to put their rubbish. That way, they won’t be tempted to throw things out of their cars on to roads and verges. Maidstone Council currently spends £1.5m a year cleaning up litter and fly-tipping. Cllr Marion Ring, Cabinet member for the Environment said: “The money spent remov- ing litter from Maidstone’s roads could be spent elsewhere. The ‘Bag it, Bin it!’ message is an easy way to reduce litter.”
Appeal victory for woodland COUNCILLORS have been vindicated for overruling officers and refusing an application for a home on the edge ofWalderslade. In November last year,Maidstone Council’s planning committee blocked the development for land off Beechen Bank, Boxley Road. Despite being advised by planners to allow it, members turned it down, fearing it could lead to the end of the “green-fingered” ap- pearance of the area. This decision was backed on appeal by government inspector
AlanWoolnough, who said: “The proposal is harmful to the char- acter and appearance of the surrounding area and the landscape quality of the Beechen Banks ALLI [Area of Local Landscape Im- portance] by reason of its partial erosion of one of the locality’s valuable ‘green fingers’.”
Help give elderly residents brighter futures DO you enjoy driving and have an hour or two each week to spare? If so, Voluntary Action Maidstone wants to hear from you. Brighter Futures, part of VAM, has launched a series of fall pre- vention classes for the elderly, to give tips in postural stability and help keep them out of hospital. Classes are taking place in Coxheath and will soon be extended to other areas. However, not all elderly people are able to get to theWednes-
day afternoon classes without help, so more drivers are needed. Volunteer drivers will also be needed to help with classes in Lenham and Staplehurst on other weekdays. Call Danny Hewis on 01622 762403 or email
