CHILDREN at St John’s C of E School received a visit from PCSO Andy Hawthorn, who showed them how to use the new crossing in ProvenderWay. Costing almost £50,000, the puffin crossing came into use after the half-term holiday. Head teacher Tim Harrington

said: “The school is delighted that all the hard work has led to the provision of a crossing. “It has been a team effort, led

by Boxley Parish Council and involving KCC member Paul Carter, borough Cllr Wendy Hinder and school governors.” Parish councillor and school governorVicDavies said: “When the covers came off, the children were really excited to press that button for the first time.” The crossing was made possi-

ble by Boxley paying £28,652 with funding of £15,000 from County Cllr Carter, £5,000 from St John’s School and £1,000 from borough CllrWendy Hinder.

Nuisance bikes

on Pilgrims’Way CONCERNS that trail bikes are continuing to illegally use Pil- grims’Way have been raised by Boxley Council. Investigation by the parish of-

fice and the Public Rights of Way (PROW) office have thrown up a number of issues, including conflicting signage. KCC has confirmed that

motor cycles are not permitted and it has been asked to replace the PROW fingerpost with an old style one that does not have a picture of a motorbike on it. Boxley members welcomed a

report on the matter and Cllr Kevin Perry hoped this would be rectified promptly. There are two signs – one say-

ing motorcycles are permitted, the other prohibiting them. Mid Kent Downs Group would be logging usage by mo- torcycles, and the police motor- bike unit would be asked to visit the area. Better weather brought an upsurge in use, re- sulting in two motorcyclists being fined

Church wall repair THE council has arranged for a repair to the north west corner of the front churchyard. The listed wall needed re-mortaring to make it weatherproof and to ensure no further disintegration.

PCSO Andy Hawthorn and head teacher Tim Harrington join pupils on the puffin crossing Accident prompts speed review Scout HQ plans

CRASH records and speed lim- its along Lidsing Road were dis- cussed following a recentmajor accident by the Harrow pub. PCSO Andy Hawthorn is to arrange for a temporary device which warns drivers if they are speedingorthanksthemifthey are within the limit. He said it was difficult to

carry out normal speed checks on this “rat-run” stretch, as there was nowhere safe for offi-

cers to stand, or to pull mo- torists in. It was suggested that signs to

warn of dangerous bends could ease the problem, but Cllr Kaz Macklin said altering drivers’ conduct was the key. “Signs become familiar in the landscape, then they don’t no- tice them,” she said. KCC has said the speed limit

on the road cannot be reduced, as it is not in a built-up area.

Grants available for community projects A £10,000 scheme to finance community projects in the parish is being launched by Boxley Council. Members have approved guidelines which will be available to applicants. Initially, a maximum of two projects may be partly or fully funded, although not all of the budget may be allocated. The Community Project scheme will favour proposals with the widest benefit to the community. A panel of five people, includ- ing at least three parish councillors, will select the winning proj- ects. Further details are available from the parish office.

TV studio parking PARKING problems were again experienced at Grove Green during a show at the TV studio. CllrWendyHinder contacted

Geoff Miles, director of Maid- stone Studios and it seemed there was a misunderstanding which resulted in visitors being turned away when there was space available. The studio will review parking to ensure this does not happen again.

Council’s new blood THE parish council is hoping that itswork in encouraging the public to stand for elections has been successful, andwill trigger parish council elections. Chairman Martin Pepper said:

“This council doesn’t want to stand still so we’ve tried to get some new blood, ideas and views. I’m hoping everyone gets out and votes for who they want to represent them.”

The plans, which Boxley Council wished to see ap- proved, also included a build- ing for a climbing wall.

ing quotes for the items and their installation at the site at Penshurst Close, Grove Green.
