TWOMaidstone residents have been chosen to be torchbearers in the Olympic torch relay. Julia Chilcott, from Alling-
ton, was selected for her com- mitment to foster caring. Julia (55), has provided a loving en- vironment for children and is “a caring person who sees good in everyone”. She said: “I wanted to give something back and I have al- ways worked with children so this was the perfect opportu- nity. I have fostered more than 80 children. It’s an honour to have been picked and I’m very excited.” Melwyn Moore (47), from
Fant, has been a detective ser- geant for Kent Police for 18 years and has run 21 consecu- tive recent London marathons. He said: “I’m chuffed to bits.
It’s a really great opportunity and it’s all about the involve- ment.” Hundreds of people are expected to line the streets on July 19 and 20 as the torch is carried through the town. Torchbearers willwear a white and gold uniform designed by Adidas. An average of 115 torchbearers a day will carry the Olympic Flame during its 8,000 mile journey around the UK before it arrives at the Olympic Stadium on July 27, 2012 for the lighting of the cauldron, signifying the official start of the London Games.

pen soon for the business to survive. “If repair work started tomorrow, it would take up to eight months to get the shop back into shape. It is getting to the stage where it may not be worthwhile opening and trying to buid up goodwill again. “If it was rebuilt I would not get relief
on rent and rates and would the turnover be there to pay for it? It does severely question whether I can open up again, which would be tragic for me, tragic for the village and tragic for the staff that work with me. “Those people have got a jail term, but
they have taken my pension away. That is what they did. I am62 years old and to build up a pension atmyage is difficult.” Mike Hart of Ramac Holdings said that engineers were currently working with Maidstone Council to gain Building Reg- ulation approval before repairs can take place.
The constituency office of MP Hugh Robertson, in the top floor of the building, was also severelydamaged by the fire.He now holds surgeries in the library at 11 The Square, Lenham.
