Vendor Relationships: What You Should Be Doing:

■ Immediately learn which of your vendors’ in-dash ma- rine products are waterproof or water-resistant. This will help guide prospective customers to the model best suited for their needs. Additionally, understand how many remote controls each head unit will accept (some will take only two, others will take up to 12) to properly guide customers to the best solution.

■ It’s important to closely manage inventory, but it’s also equally important to have enough inventory on-hand to avoid losing sales. Forty-five days before the end of ma- rine season, evaluate your inventory position and begin a discounting strategy that will get inventories down to a manageable level once marine season ends. Vendors might have some resources available to help move this in- ventory, so be prepared to discuss exactly what you need when asked.

Break-Even Analysis Why it’s important: Know what it will take to make money on a project or campaign before you start it.

Determining Potential Profit or Loss: Selling a $10 accessory Profit = ((Price per unit – Variable cost per unit) * Units to Sell) – Fixed Costs

(($10 - $4.50)*1000) - $7,700 = $5,500 profit $7,700 fixed costs - $5,500 profit = -$2,200 loss at 1,000 units sold.

Determining Break-Even: Break-even = Fixed Costs / (Profit – Variable Costs) $7,700 / ($10- $4.50) = 1,400 units to sell to break even
