Stuff to Read Vendor Relationships: What You Should Be Doing
■ By now, many of you are in full close-out mode. If it makes sense for you, ask vendors if they would be interested in offering end-of-year discounting on selected models, which would allow you to make a one-time purchase (at the right price, of course) and basically “own” a product in your retail area. Always adhere to MAP as required by each vendor’s policy; however, some vendors will allow for a MAP “holiday” from time to time. This needs to be clarified during the purchase consideration process.

Calculating Sales Trends Why it’s important: Gives you the big picture of where you are heading, and allows you to head trouble off at the pass.
Add last 3 months’ sales: Jan – Mar, 2012 sales = $132,000
Average same period’s sales over the prior 3 years Jan – Mar, 2011, 2010, 2009 / 3: ($172,000 + $170,000 + $178,000) / 3 = $173,333 average 3-month sales over the prior 3 years
Divide current period by prior 3-year average: $132,000/$173,333 = .762 or 76.2%
Subtract 100 percent from this number to determine trending increase or decrease 76.2% - 100% = -23.8% trending sales decline
