On November 19th, our Middle School and Secondary students participated in the National Debate Competition. Both the Middle School teams of (Megan Sutcliffe, Hailey Quig and Ashleigh Tomkins) and (Jada Simmons, Victoria Escapil and Ella Burt) and the Senior Teams of (Aanika Rahman, Kathleen McBeath and Alex Cash) and (Lara Hetzel, Chelzea Somner and Megan Bower) did an excellent job. Our top Middle School team of Megan Sutcliffe, Hailey Quig and Ashleigh Tomkins won the overall Middle School Debate Championships. Individual prizes were won by Megan Sutcliffe - top Middle School debater and Hailey Quig - 3rd place individual Middle School debater. Lara Hetzel placed 4th overall as a Senior individual debater. Coaches for the Middle School team were Melissa Brough and Linda Parker. The Senior Debate Coach was Harvey Cornish.


On November 21st, 3 BHS students were recognized at The Universal Day of the Child celebration at The Berkeley Institute. The Young Citizens Awards were given to youth who consistently displayed the following behaviours: kindness, forgiveness, helpfulness, acceptance of others and standing up for the rights of others. The BHS Young Citizen Awards were presented to Lizzie Thresh (Year 6); Lillian Griffiths (Year 8) and Karina Rebellato (Year 10).


On December 12, a whole-school Holiday Music Concert was performed for the first time in recent memory with many students taking part in their first performance ever. From a Year 2 flautist to IB string players, the whole school was represented thanks to the hard work of our music teachers, Carolann Amjath, Sally Crawford, Emma Cowell and Derek Tully.


During the first week of December, the Years 1-3 gave their annual Holiday Performance: The Reindeer Whisperer.


On December 4th, 34 BHS students received their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Awards and 35 were presented with their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards at the 44th Annual Duke of Edinburgh Award Ceremony at The Hamilton Princess.


On December 5th, Sarah Hopkin ‘12 and Jennie Lee O’Donnell (parent) were recognized by BHS as ‘going over and above’ for volunteering. They received certificates at The Centre on Philanthropy’s Annual Volunteer Reception on International Volunteer Day.


On December 14th, all students surprised Head of School, Linda (Noble) Parker ’78 on her 50th birthday with balloons, a card signed by all students and a trip down memory lane with photos supplied by Linda’s mother. Each student received a “Happy Birthday, Mrs. Parker” pencil and staff were treated to cake.


Our staff really are Superheroes: On December 15, 2011, Secondary Teachers dressed up as elves, munchkins, fairies and superheroes to raise money for the Teachers Association Bursary Fund. Students and staff paid to see the teachers dressed up and helped to raise over $1000 for student financial aid.
