On October 19, BMDS, The Centre on Philanthropy, BEST, Bermuda Hospitals Board, PALS, Teen Services and the Bermuda Zoological Society set up in the QEH to encourage students to sign up to volunteer for their organisations as part of their community service requirement. Volunteering provides an opportunity to work and interact with people from different walks of life, while providing valuable lessons in teamwork, leadership, and commitment to something above and beyond our daily existence.
On October 19th, BHS students presented an abridged version of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale at the 4th Annual Shakespeare Festival, held at The Berkeley Institute. The BHS cast did an outstanding job and received some complimentary comments and a memento award from the Governor. Congratulations are extended to the cast and their director, Jane Thorpe and assistant director Nathaniel Sussman (IB2).
The Round Square International Conference at Wellington College in Berkshire, UK, was an astounding success. In October, Connie Campbell, Lara Hetzel, Nathaniel Sussman, Sean Stapley (all IB students) and chaperones Mary Faulkenberry, Mark Thorpe and Andrew Jones travelled to the Conference which was opened by Queen Elizabeth.
In October, three BHS students participated in the Independent Schools Public Speaking competition in Vancouver, Canada. Harvey Cornish (chaperone and coach) accompanied the students: Aoife Rynne (Yr 11), Andrew Sussman (IB1) and Chelzea Somner (IB2).
On November 18th, BHS students celebrated different countries and cultures for International Day. In the morning, IB Students led discussions in Primary classrooms, each of which were assigned a country, and then worked on a craft with the students. In the Secondary department, each form room was decorated to represent a country. After a lunch hour in which students could sample food representing different regions, the Adventure Pillar Leaders launched a scavenger hunt. Each Primary student was paired up with a Secondary student to visit the secondary form rooms and answers questions on the Milennium Development Goals. Finally, Robin Skinner ’96 presented an engaging slideshow and talk about what international travel can teach you.
In mid-November, eight IB students attended the Model United Nations Conference at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.
