Art Auction Preview

On May 19, 2012, BHS will hold a fundraising Art Auction that features work from some of our creative Alumni. Here Torchbearer gets to know some of the artists contributing to the Auction.

Vivienne J Gardner ‘47

I graduated in 1947, having been a student at the BHS since 1940. I then went to The Cooper Union Art School in New York City.

I love all painting media but have found myself being commissioned mostly to work in stained glass. I have also done mosaic murals and many sculptures. My inspiration for art is drawn from the beauty I see around me, particularly in the effects of light and colour. Maths and Biology were my favourite lessons - the latter giving me the opportunity to illustrate the subjects with beautiful diagrams. I also thoroughly enjoyed the drama classes with Mrs Brass and was involved in acting in the plays as well as doing the scenery; in fact, I continue to help with the scenery for BHS productions.

20 Torchbearer Spring 2012

I attended BHS for 11 years until 2005 when I moved to school in the US. I remember a lot from Primary school arts and crafts and I always really enjoyed “art time”. It was my best subject from a very early age. Today my medium is oil paint and I find inspiration in interesting people and places, and also strange objects. I plan to paint a “Promise Portrait” for the highest bidder at the Art Auction.
