Torchbearer gets a new look Welcome

In September 2011, I was very fortunate to be asked to lead the advancement efforts of The Bermuda High School. I have always been proud to say that I am a BHS graduate. I am prouder still to be a present parent and now staff member as I join 27 other alumnae who have chosen BHS for their workplace. The Bermuda High School is a community; a family. It is the place where young girls become young women. It is the place that gives our daughters a diverse and stable foundation from which to lead productive lives. For the last ten years, we have also provided a challenging learning environment for young men in the two years before they depart for university, through our co-ed IB programme. Here is how we, in the advancement office, are working hard to better serve you and BHS:

• We will collaborate and communicate more effectively both internally and externally so that we can enhance our relationships with alumni, parents and donors – we have already introduced the lily, our e-newsletter, and consolidated edline messages so that there is one school-wide email per week (barring emergency notices). You will also notice that this edition of Torchbearer looks a bit different from past editions of either Torchbearer or Flame. Going forward we will have two editions of Torchbearer each year, both of which will highlight alumni and school news and in which we will aim to bring you topical profiles and articles.

• We plan to do more to engage you. We would love to have you as a volunteer in the school, see you give a presentation to a class, come out to an alumni event or attend a lunch and learn.

• We want your feedback – we want to know how we are doing as a school. Let us know how we can be more effective at maintaining a relationship with you, tell us what you expect from us and let us know when you have questions. Call me at 441.278.3040, email me (jburlandadams@bhs.bm) or stop by the school for a visit.

Please allow me to extend my sincere thanks for your support of, and commitment to, The Bermuda High School. You are integral to our success in preparing young women and men to become confident, responsible global citizens. I hope you enjoy this new version of Torchbearer. In it you will find profiles of alumni who are artists from every decade from the 1940s to the 2000s. As we prepare for our Art Auction on May 19th, it was great to catch up with some of our best known alumni and learn more about up and comers (pg. 20). You will also read about some of our volunteers, both at the School and students volunteering in the classroom (pg. 10) and we are happy to introduce you to our Head Students, including BHS’s first ever Head Boy, Nick Hall (page 9). And of course, we have recent news from alumni starting on page 17. I encourage alumni to send in your news so that we can share it with your former classmates, your BHS family. And if you have suggestions on how to make this publication better or ideas for feature stories, feel free to email me or give me a call. As I said above, we want your feedback!
