this pizzeria 12 years ago, he made it his own by tweaking the recipes from the previous Canadian owners of 15 years. His original recipes are surprisingly good and the pizza has excellent fresh toppings (my favorite: pepperoni, jalapeño, mushroom, red onion and pineapple), with one of the best tender crunch crusts. Ask for the cheese bread stuffed with fresh cheese and chopped parsley with marinara and ranch dipping sauces—the Greek pizza is also tasty. Definitely worth a little detour for take-out before dark! EXCELLENT TAKE-OUT
HOLE-IN-THE-WALL DE CUISINE
We all remember the old adage;
“don’t judge a book by its cover” or in this case “don’t judge a restaurant’s food by its store-front.” The following diamonds-in- the-rough are remind- ers as to why that saying is true; first case in point:
Mexi-Casa Moving slightly up on the dive
food chain is an Anaheim institution, Mexi-Casa. I have been going to this place for over 35 years and they have probably raised their prices $1 in all of that time. You can get a complete
Long Beach’s Canadian Pizza and Grill Restaurant Your first look at this Fourth Street institution, might make you think maybe not, but go with the maybe because Canadian Pizza has delicious food. It’s crucial to give shout-outs to worthy little mom and pop restaurants, no matter how off-putting the bones of the place may be. Truth be told, I have had some terrible food at five-star posh restaurants and some of the best eats from take-out dives. When Luis Jaureguri took over
dinner for $4.50, which includes chips and salsa (ask for hot and mild). The Americanized Mexican food is consistently good; the tacos are my favorite (chicken or shredded beef). Wet Burritos are great to bring home and easily reheat. My friends like the Tostada Salad, Machaca or the Chili Verde and they have the best cheese around. Gwen Stefani has been going there for years and still returns for the historically consistent food. While the amenities may be sub-par, the Mexican food is always been fresh and has always been consistently good in its quality. No deliveries, no phone orders, you must be there in person to order take-out ,or just stay there and chow down! Cash only. Mexi-Casa, 1778 West Lincoln Avenue, Anaheim, CA 92801. O.C.’s Grandma’s Chicken House Talk about a dichotomy, this treasure
is a true hole-in the-wall. . . But guess what? They have the best take-out broasted chicken around. The crispy flavorful coating is addictive and the chicken moist, juicy and tender, I don’t know what they do to it, but I find myself frequently craving the classic “Picnic Basket” which comes with three pieces of chicken , four broasted potato quarters, with either a side of fresh coleslaw, incredible baked beans or macaroni salad and accompanied by a funny ‘60s dinner roll—all costing a whopping $5.60. If you prefer two breasts, it is just $6.15. I always get a side order of zucchini which is one of my favorites—they also have shrimp and fish dinners and ribs, but the chicken is a must-have. Grandma’s Chicken House, 6072 Lincoln Ave.,Cypress, CA. Order ahead at 714.826.4161.
Torung In Hollywood So Right! If you’re ever in Hollywood and
looking for excellent authentic take-out Thai food, there are several of them in Thai Town. But the stand-out is Torung; I usually walk in and order and within ten minutes I am hoping on the 101 home, anticipating how delicious my Chicken Satay, Pad Thai, Shrimp Red Curry with bamboo shoots and steamed rice will be. Everything on the menu is excellent with the best prices around. Their soups and curries are some the best, they arrive in a flaming tureen, steaming hot if you eat in. Torung, 5657 Hollywood Boulevard. 323.464.2750 Daily 5 p.m. – 4 a.m. Cash Only.
HONORABLE MENTION JAY’S PICK
Porky’s BBQ Rage’s Jay Jones mentioned that
when in Long Beach he loves to go to Porky’s BBQ. The fall-off-the-bone rib slabs are slow-cooked over hickory wood for up to nine hours and thoughtfully trimmed. The briskets and pork shoulders are cooked up to 20 hours! Porky’s offers specials on paper bag lunches and Jay’s personal favorites are the Golden Bird Fried Chicken and Pulled Pork Sandwich. Porky’s BBQ sauces have a distinctive smoky flavor on the large menu of great items and they even feature Kansas City style BBQ. Porky’s Barbecue has two locations: 362 W. 6th Street, Downtown San Pedro, 310.521.9999 and 937 Redondo Avenue, Long Beach, 562.434.9999 or
