P. ALLEN SMITH

Inside and Out

Blurs the Lines by joel martens

Here we are in Southern California, with some of the best weather in the world and what do we do? Spend 70 percent of our time inside, working and sleeping. We all understand the inevitability of this for the most part—one has to support oneself. Optimizing the experience of how we spend that time, what the space looks like and how it feels to be there are completely under our control and totally changeable. There is much information out there on designing interior living spaces, with many

experts sharing their ideas about what makes a house a home. The thought process though, of limiting design to the interior of your property only is shortsighted— especially here in California. In my discussion with P. Allen Smith, I learned a new perspective on the definition of what a home could be—one that challenges the limited concept of living spaces confined strictly to the “inside.” So take a deep breath as we plunge in and learn from a master.
