MADNESS RUNNING WILD

MARCH rolls around and I start to think of all things green… St. Patrick’s Day and the proverbial wearin’ o’ the green was a big deal

for my family, since my grandfather was an Irishman (kind of the size of a leprechaun too—it’s a family trait that I gratefully missed), we were required to toast the bonny homeland and drink the Irish whiskey he was so fond of. Truth be told, even the smell of the stuff makes me green now. At any rate, if you like to celebrate, there will be much reveling in the streets downtown as they literally carpet them with green Astroturf. Jay Jones, our publisher and I went last year and had a blast wander-

ing around, drinking the green beer, listening to the bands and watch- ing the performers do their thing. The best part though, was the other show—the people on the streets. This Downtown party provides hours of entertainment, if you haven’t been to ShamRock, go check it out! The other thing that happens to me this time of year, is that I get

the itch to clean and improve my surroundings. The house, the yard, the garden, you name it, I want to start the re-do process everywhere. Thankfully my green thumb is limited to a small patio with just enough space to keep me interested, but not enough to tie me down to much. I sought out advice from Michael Brennan, a landscape architect friend of mine, about putting in drought-tolerant plantings and it turned into him writing an article for us on page 48, because his knowledge was vast so I thought, “why not tap that font?” Another plantman, P. Allen Smith has a lot to say on similar topics

and we interviewed him on page 42 about gracious living and how to create a home that is as versatile outside as it is inside. What an affable southern gentleman with a great sensibility. Make sure to check out his website for much more information once you read our feature. I am an organizational nut, so I totally connected with Amanda

LeBlanc from the TV show The Amandas on page 46, as we talked about cleaning the house of clutter. That is another spring ritual for me and she gives us all pointers about keeping it simple, keeping it clean and keeping it pretty. This girl’s closet is more beautiful that most, I mean really, I thought I was the only person on earth who color-coordinated my closet… Hmm—maybe that’s something I should’ve keep hidden in the dark recesses there ?
