SPIRITUAL BOOT CAMP
SPRING CLEANING
by jacob glass “NATURE ABHORS A VACUUM” and rushes to fill it up again. That is
why no matter how many times we clean out that hall closet, we’re going to have to do it again—usually sooner than we think. We accept the fact that our homes and vehicles need regular care and cleaning, but our most permanent residence is right between our ears. We need to constantly clean out our mind of old ideas, beliefs and thoughts that no longer serve us—and we must do it even more vigi- lantly than we clean the bathroom sink. I often tell people, “don’t believe everything you think.” We must regularly go
through our minds and do mental housecleaning to clear out the things we cur- rently believe which are causing us stress, worry and negativity. I call it “sweeping the porch” before we invite in our new guests. Just as a nutritionist might come into your kitchen and throw out all the “junk food” before starting you on a new nutrition program, we need to clear our minds of our “junk” thoughts to make room for the new loving, uplifting, positive, life affirming thoughts. This is the time to THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT. Take some
time to reflect on your mental house and see if there are old limiting thoughts, worries, beliefs, assumptions that no longer serve you. Go inside yourself for some quiet time to reflect on what goes on in your mind on a daily basis. Look at the way you mentally talk to yourself and honesty answer the question, “If I spoke to a friend or loved one the way I am mentally speaking to myself, would they still want to be in my life? Am I being a good encouraging friend to myself? Is this the mental household where I want to live my life?” What is it time for you to let go of? What are the thoughts, beliefs and concepts
that no longer serve you in becoming all that you want to be? If you are going to create a vacuum so that the Universe can fill it up with the life of your dreams, what current thoughts and beliefs do you hold which are not in alignment with that vision? Write any limiting negative thoughts out on paper and then “donate” them to
your higher self to take away, because you no longer have any use for them. Decide how you want to FEEL this spring and then ask yourself, “What kind of thoughts will I need to think in order to feel this way?” Begin to visualize how you will feel in this new season as you cultivate and rearrange these new thoughts, incorporating them into your mental world. Then, write out those thoughts. You can even print them out and put them in your date book, on the fridge, the bathroom mirror, at your desk. Read them daily and say them aloud to yourself throughout the day. Cultivate general thoughts of possibilities rather than old limitations.

“The way out of conflict between two opposing thought systems
is clearly to choose one and relinquish the other.”
A Course In Miracles
Some of my favorite general affirmative thoughts are: • I always have what I need. • Lots can happen and I don’t have to know HOW it will happen. • There is no need to worry or rush because the Universe has perfect timing. • I’m always at the right place at the right time. • I am being perfectly guided through the open doors to my greater good. In order to keep your new mind clean and clear I recommend a very important
exercise—a 30-day process in which you do a mental fast from the Four Emotional Cancers. It means 30 days of no criticizing, competing, comparing or complaining. Since nature abhors a vacuum, it can be difficult to simply eliminate something
from your life even for 30 days without having it come right back again. It is much easier if you consciously REPLACE it with something else. Here are ways we can neutralize these negative thought patterns.
EMOTIONAL CANCER
NEUTRALIZERS: 1. Criticizing how others are living or what they are doing instead becomes CREATING what YOU want and letting go of what others are up to. 2. The negative passivity of complaining becomes actively CHOOSING how YOU will respond or what positive action you will take. 3. Competition with others becomes COOPERATING or partnering with the universe and others. 4. Comparing yourself to others becomes CLAIMING your own life path and COMPLIMENTING yourself for the wonderful unique way that YOU are choos- ing to live now.
