A trip to South Africa was an eye-opener for Fine and Country Southern Hampshire director Colin Shairp. The Fine and Country International Convention in Johannesburg and its Africa and Asia property awards ceremony introduced Colin to delegates from across the world but also gave the opportunity to study the South African property market and estate agency industry. Colin was impressed by new

South African laws requiring estate agents to hold qualifications. “I thought the chance to meet

international delegates would be great but what I learned about estate agency in South Africa was even more important,” says Colin. “The number of people in the industry there has plummeted from about 80,000 to 30,000, partly due to the recession but also attributable to the new rules. “While I don’t want to see

wholesale sackings in the UK, the South African model clearly shows that stricter standards can be implemented. Tough times in the UK industry have already started sorting the wheat from the chaff and there is no better time to require estate agents to adopt higher professional standards. “I’ve been in the industry almost

30 years but have just taken, and thankfully passed, the Guild examination. I suggest to everyone who wants to buy or sell a house that they ask estate agents what training they give to their staff and what level of registration they have with The Property Ombudsman.” Pictured l-r: Jon Cooke, Fine and
