20 QUESTIONS
Clare Morgan – marketing controller with Peter’s Foods
1. How did you get into your current job? Joining Peter’s was very much about ‘right place, right time’. With more than 10 years experience in the ‘fast moving consumer goods sector’ – six of those in London for a baked food maker – I was thinking about moving back to Wales. Then, by surprise, I was headhunted by the Peter’s commercial director to join the business. An opportunity I was certainly not going to miss.
2. What’s the best bit? The culture – a big Welsh business with an even bigger Welsh heart
3. What was your first Saturday job? I worked at a local and very traditional green grocers. So I started working in the food industry very young. Not planned of course!
4. Describe your ideal job. I would love to be a film director. To be able to make people, laugh, cry, shake with terror and shape an audience’s emotions would be immense.
5. What motivates you? Achieving goals I set myself. This could be as simple as getting all the housework done on the weekend, running 10k in under 60mins or finalising a customer presentation on time.
6. What irritates you? When people don’t say please or thank you. These were some of the first things I learned as a child. It’s nice when you hear people say them.
7. Who do you most admire in business and why? I admire Peter Jones (Dragons Den) who successfully built up a profitable business over many years yet made one bad decision which led him to lose his total business and his home. Yet this did not deter him and through determination and hard work built the business again from scratch. To manage this emotionally as well as professionally and to make it a success is admirable.
8. What was the last book you read and what did you think? “How to be a women” by Caitlin Moren. This book is described as ‘part memoir, part rant’. It brings to life hilarious moments in a girl’s and woman’s life – some which we can all relate too. She is an extremely clever writer yet makes it look easy.
9. What do you do to relax? At home a big glass of Spanish Rioja always does the trick. But if I’m feeling in need of something special, I enjoy a massage at the local beauty salon, I’ve fallen asleep during it on many occasions!
10. What dreams are you still to fulfill? I’d love to visit New Zealand. Also attending a Rugby
58 THEbusiness QUARTER
World Cup final with Wales playing – but I think this could be many people’s dream!
11. What was the last film you saw at the cinema? Bridesmaids – a real light hearted girl comedy, a good Friday cinema film or DVD at home.
12. Favourite food and place to eat it? I really enjoy Moroccan food, full of flavour and always surprise your taste buds. I particularly enjoy cooking Lamb Tagine at home, it’s my signature dish. In terms of places to eat, there’s nothing quite like a really good Italian pasta lunch on top of a ski slope in Italy, after hours of skiing. You just enjoy it that much more!
13. What car do you drive? I drive a 3series BMW for work, but for pleasure I would choose to drive a classic Nissan Figaro, in mint green. It’s quirky, fun and has a little something special about it.
14. What’s in your car’s cd player at the moment? I recently went to a Wombat’s gig in Cardiff and was really surprised by how good they were, so they are my current CD of choice. Or if I feel like something a little smoother Caro Emerald is another favourite.
15. What’s your favourite TV programme? I must admit I am a big fan of ‘Celebrity Juice’ hosted by Keith Lemon. It’s fresh comedy, always teetering on the edge and is guaranteed to have me in stitches
16. Do you tweet? If so can we follow you? If not, why? I don’t personally tweet but am heavily involved in the official Peter’s tweets. It’s a fun way to engage with our consumers.
17. If you were an animal what would you be? A Cocker Spaniel – like them, I am energetic and sporty yet sensitive and kind.
18. Proudest moment? Achieving a First Class Honours Degree in BA Retail Marketing. But I am also immensely proud and lucky to have succeeded in a career I really love.
19. And most embarrassing? I appeared on ‘Ready Steady Cook’ when I was 19 and when asked ‘Who is your favourite band and the lead singer?’ I said Oasis and Damon Albarn! Ooops!
20. What advice would you give to someone wanting to be successful in your line of work? Set yourself personal goals and work tirelessly to achieve them, even if it means putting the extra hours in to get there. My mum once said to me ‘working long hours, doesn’t mean you’re inefficient, it means you’re dedicated and that’s what brings the rewards’. Aren’t mums always right?
