Using ‘.wales’ or ‘.cymru’ could help with branding in certain contexts. For some sectors (such as perhaps tourism) this could open up all sorts of possibilities. In truth, I think individual businesses would have to decide what works best for them. From our particular perspective as a full service law firm, more and more of our work is for clients outside of Wales, so we would have to decide how a Welsh domain name would fit in with that the ever changing legal marketplace.
The Usk Barrage Scheme like others of its ilk is like raising a red flag to a bull – with it barely flashed the charge begins. However as time goes on and the environment, technology and the economy changes it would seem any initiative that would provide alternatives to energy sources as well as boosting the economy through job creation, improved transportation links, tourism and potentially a bolstered housing market, would be a good thing to be resurrected. Given the current state of affairs is now the time?

Of course Wales should have its own domain name. For me it should be .wales in order to advertise our country internationally. I was recently in Nepal and when asked where I came from I of course replied Wales – I got a blank look back! I drew a map and didn’t put England on until last. When I mentioned England his eyes opened “Ah England, Manchester United! David Beckham!” David Beckham is more famous than my country! We should promote Wales as much as possible. I would definitely want a .wales domain to link to our main .com website and would use them both alongside each other.
A barrage across the River Usk that would
be incorporated with the M4 bypass would be the best thing that could happen for Newport and the valleys. An attempt at resurrection of the scheme would be a start but, call me cynical, I don’t think it will happen. Vision is in short supply within the powers that be – oh yeah money is too!
We have it on good authority that the Gwent economy has already benefited in excess of £10m from the Olympics Park infrastructure. When the events themselves begin this will be boosted by the granting of smaller contracts generated by Welsh based events such as football and regional training camps for both Olympian and Paralympian teams from around the world. These contracts typically would be for site services such as catering, security and fencing but also stretch to geographical opportunities such as accommodation and transport.
Are there any? Well we have the Olympic torch passing through Newport and Gwent. I may be wrong and I would like to know more if I am but, as far as I am aware, that is all that will be happening, ‘passing through’. I understand there will be some football played in the Millennium stadium and some teams, particularly Australia, will be carrying out their pre-games training in Wales but that’s it!
