KyminA A AUWN Purnells

I don’t have a problem either way on this. As a proud Welsh firm, Kymin would be delighted to use a Wales domain name, although we would have to run it in tandem with our existing .co.uk , at least for a while. As Wales’ leading IFA firm, we would support such a move if there was a strong groundswell of opinion in favour.

If there were a domain name for Wales I would not use it. That does not mean that I am not proud of being Welsh, far from it. In business, however, I do not think that it would be wise to categorise ourselves into small boxes. The domain name of .co. uk shows the world that you are based in the UK. However, if your domain name is a dot com, then you give the impression that you are international.

I am very much in favour of this. The original proposal was dropped after an official from the Welsh Office took one trip up and down the river, by boat, not viewing from the land. Instead of spending billions up-grading the railway from London to Birmingham, (why anyone would want to get to Birmingham quicker, I’m not quite sure), the money would be better spent ( I mean millions, not billions), creating a leisure facility based around the river. The university, the new housing, indeed the whole city, would benefit hugely from such a development.

Relatively little, I would have thought. Will the Velodrome be used for practice in the months running up to the games? I understand it is one of few such facilities in the UK.

Yes, yes, yes, we need the Usk Barrage. It would bring so many benefits to Newport and the surrounding areas. Investment in infrastructure would create jobs and the economic benefits could be great. Just look at Cardiff Bay! On a totally separate issue, the Severn Estuary (of which the River Usk is part) has the second highest tidal range in the world. When the river is empty it is not a pretty sight and when it is full, it can be overflowing leading to localised flooding. A barrage would benefit all.

Wales has five world class mountain bike centres, Cwmcarn being one of them. Their reputation has grown, transforming Wales into a Mecca for mountain bike enthusiasts from far and wide, biking through some of the most beautiful high country you will find anywhere. An ideal place for the Olympic mountain bike events to take place. Instead the events are taking place at Hadleigh Farm in Essex, on one of the flattest regions in England with a maximum elevation of just 70 metres and little in the way of natural features. Wales has missed out.

“It can only really be a welcome thing for businesses and organisations for whom the Wales brand is important to their success. It’ll also be useful for tourism and leisure. For example, a “Newport. Wales” website could be really good in promoting the city to business, tourists and others. I am sure the university would use it.” Dr Peter Noyes, Vice Chancellor

Our identity as a Welsh business is very important to us. A domain suffix specifically for Wales would open a raft of prime domain names and allow businesses to better represent themselves through their websites and email addresses. It would need to be something easily identifiable to ensure that businesses with international partners don’t make their domains less accessible.

As a Chartered Civil Engineer, I have always been in favour of an Usk Barrage and the benefits it will bring to the City and the local economy in the guise of development opportunities and construction jobs. The ecological challenges thrown up by any scheme must of course be addressed as a priority, and a solution suitable to all parties surely should not be beyond our professional engineering problem solving capabilities.” Norman Seward, Programme Leader, Civil and Construction Engineering

“We are obviously hoping that the Olympic training in the region will be a success. The university will do all it can to support that. The flipside is of course, the drawing in of capital investment to London and the South East. As a university with a really strong sports department, it is also welcome that the Olympics will no doubt foster the interest in sport of a whole new generation.” Dr Peter Noyes, Vice Chancellor

The barrage would enable the area surrounding Rodney Parade to have a genuine riverside feel and increase the value and attractiveness of the area. Because of the proximity of the river to the city centre, it would not detract from the high street and would encourage people to spend more time in Newport.

Any event which can inspire young people to get into sport has to be seen as a cultural and social positive. The return to Newport of cycling stars including Sir Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton will give inspiration to local youngsters. From a business point of view, the increase in tourism to south Wales for Olympic and Paralympic events will be fantastic if businesses ensure that they take full advantage.
