Grey Coat Issue 18: December 2011 Creative Quarter 2011

Miss Daly’s Year 11 Graphics GCSE group were fortunate enough to visit Creative Quarter 2011 in November at the Royal Albert Hall.

They took part in workshops and talks from top design agency, Bibliotek and Amanda Levete Architects.

Bibliotek, who have produced ad campaigns and marketing strategies for top brands such as Nike, Adidas and Hed Kandi, discussed with students the importance

The students also visited the exhibition, The Power of Making and were amazed at the skilful and innovative methods used to produce everyday objects, including a racing bike made from mahogany (Miss Daly’s favourite!)

D & T students visit city farm

On Friday 25th November Miss Hernandez, Mrs Hayhurst and the year 12 Textiles class visited the Vauxhall City Farm to explore the different natural dyeing techniques first hand. One of the members of staff showed us a number of different plants that produce the colours that are used in textiles every day. As well as this we got to learn about how wool goes from the animal to the garments sold in shops. We were given a roll of wool fibre which we spun ourselves with a spindle which produced a long piece of yarn. This was then put into pots of the natural dyes we had previously seen and by the end we all had a naturally dyed piece of yarn which was very satisfying for us all.

The trip was very interesting as we actually got to see what we have been learning about this term which will benefit us in our exam and coursework! Jessica Foster and Holly Ormrod
