Grey Coat Issue 18: December 2011 Annual SW1 Gallery exhibition

One of the highlights of the year for the Art department is the annual Foundation Exhibition. In this exhibition, Art A level students from the five schools in the United Westminster Schools Foundation get together to showcase their best work. A range of work was selected for this show with some beautiful pieces including painting, drawing and photography. The private view was held on the 22nd November and it was lovely to see some of our former Art students who are now on Art Foundation courses there on the night.

Year 9 students visit Royal College of Art

On Monday 14th November I went with other people in my year to the Royal College of Art to see the Secret Postcards exhibition and to do a workshop led by a woman called Jessie Brennan, who came second in this year’s Jerwood drawing prize. The exhibition was really good and we were very lucky to see it as soon they will all be sold. It was a really good experience to be able to see pieces done by famous artists-such as Yinka Shonibare, Tracey Emin and Yoko Ono.

We then began the workshop, and first we had to make a sculpture around the verbs 'to hole', and 'to fire'. The sculpture was a team effort and the outcome was very creative. We then had to do thirty 30 second drawings of the sculpture in different media in different areas of the room. This was a really interesting exercise and we all tried many different methods of drawing-for example drawing only the negative space, drawing with the wrong hand, drawing with our mouths, drawing without looking at the page and many more interesting ways. When we had finished we got all our pictures and

assembled into groups of three where we had to curate our pictures according to different verbs. My group got the verb 'to layer' and we had a lot of fun ripping up the pictures trying to layer them in interesting ways. We only had a short time to do this and when the time was up

we looked around at what all the other groups had done. They were all very interesting and all very original. Overall, the day was really fun and I am really glad we had the opportunity to work with such a brilliant artist.
