Grey Coat 12 Number Day

Number Day is an annual event to celebrate the fun in Maths and raise money for the NSPCC. On 1st December some pupils from years 7, 8 and 9 took part in a lunchtime Maths treasure hunt for Number Day. Clues were hidden in and around the lower school playground and students worked independently and in teams to find the clues and solve the puzzles with a truly competitive spirit.

Here is a selection of the puzzles the students had to solve:

- 4 friends all sent Christmas cards to each other. How many cards were sent? - A palindromic number is the same when written backwards, e.g. 535. How many palindromic numbers are there between 100 and 300?

- Find the next number after 1 that is both a square number and a triangular number.
