Grey Coat Issue 18: December 2011 Year 10 charity week
Thank you to all who helped raised money for our chosen charity, Women for Women. This charity helps female survivors of war to rebuild their lives, and all donations are very much appreciated.
For Year 10 Charity week, we had a change collection on the door in the morning and had a Halloween treat treasure hunt. Students bought a sheet of clues to help them find orange slips hidden around the school.
In total we raised £50. Thank you to everyone who took part, your donation really will go a long way to help women in areas affected by war in the world. Jessica Southwood Charity Representative 10T

Paired reading proves positive
Paired Reading got off to a lively start after the October half-term. Eighty Sixth Form volunteers attended weekly training sessions from the middle of September and looked forward to meeting their Year 7 partners on the first Monday back after half-term. The Sixth Form students had made bookmarks to present to their young new friends on the first day and things moved from strength to strength. Paired Reading gives the younger girls an opportunity to develop reading fluency and some one-to-one advice about how to choose a good book. Run by specially selected Sixth Form Prefects, the scheme has grown this year to accommodate a larger number of volunteers and Year 7 partners than ever before. This Year’s lead prefects, Julia Titley and Louise O’Hara, have taken great pride in developing a system for rewarding regular attendance and registering and monitoring the progress of the Year 7 pupils. The St Andrew’s building buzzes on Monday lunchtimes with Paired Readers in their groups in almost every room.

my confidence in reading by reading aloud to my partner. I am also starting to enjoy reading more than before because I didn't really read that much and paired reading has encouraged me to. At first, I was not so keen on doing paired reading because my paired reader was a boy and all the other girls doing the reading had girls to read to. It did not take long for me to realise that Emanuel is a very nice boy and is good at helping me.’ Maya Duhaney- 7R
Reading is a chance for you to read to a Sixth former once a week at lunchtime.
Since doing Paired Reading I have improved my reading and have learned the meaning of new words. Shakira has been a huge help and I now feel more confident when reading out loud and choosing new books.’
