Grey Coat Issue 18: December 2011 Maths activity morning

On Friday 2nd December the whole of Year 7 took part in a maths activities morning

The session was run by the maths department and saw all of the students take part in a variety of activities. Students learnt to curve stitch, make 3 D paper stars, and make Christmas boxes. In addition they had to solve some code breaking problems which involved them decoding binary numbers working with Babylonian, Egyptian and Mayan number systems.

The following are some comments about the day from the students.

Curve stitching was AMAZING! I was blown away by how you could draw straight lines to make curves with just paper, a pencil and a ruler. It was great finding out how to draw straight lines and make it look like they were curved patterns. Sisely Ortiz 7Y

Overall, the activities on Academic Tutorial Day were very enjoyable. My favourite part was the origami boxes. I also loved the origami snowflakes. It looks complicated, but in fact it’s NOT! I learned many things, for instance, how to make curves with straight lines using

curve stitching. Karting San 7Y

I found the maths activities really fun – which is odd coming from me since I’m not a big fan of maths. I especially loved making the stars and the cute little Christmas boxes. All the activities were really

creative and I am a really creative arty person. It was a really

fantastic day; I can’t wait till the next one! Maya Jovanovic 7Y

I really enjoyed Academic Tutorial Day because it brought us together as a form and helped us to bond.

On Academic Tutorial Day I really enjoyed the Curve Stitching as I found the theory and concept behind it fascinating – how overlapping straight lines create a curved line. I also thoroughly loved making the origami

boxes as it was challenging and it was interesting when you got the hang of it. I would love to the activities again, any day! Mayowa Adebayo 7Y

My favourite was curve stitching because it was new as well as fun; and something amazing to show to friends and family. Salihah Ahmad 7Y

My favourite activity was making the origami start. I really enjoyed this activity because I’d never created anything like it before and it was fun to make something so beautiful and special with my form. Rose Gentle 7Y

I really enjoyed the curve stitching and I found it amazing how the lines curved. This is maths at its best! Chi Aligbe 7Y

I especially enjoyed the curve stitching because using only straight lines you were able to create the illusion of curved lines. Sophie Wahidullah 7Y
