Bikers pay respects to PoWs on Great Escape 2 ride

A GROUP of seven bikers gathered in Biggin Hill to begin a journey which inspired the film The Great Escape. In March 1944, Sqn Ldr Thomas Kirby-Green, shot

down over northern Germany, managed to break out of the Stalag Luft III prison camp, though he was later killed by the Gestapo. His son, Colin, from Brightlingsea, Essex, took part in

The Great Escape 2 to revisit the scene of his father's bid for freedom. His team navigated 3,000 miles across Europe on period-style Triumph motorcycles in a bid to raise £10,000 for Help for Heroes and the British Legion. Mr Kirby-Green told BBC News: "It's a great privilege because I've never visited my father's grave before in Posnan and also Stalag Luft III which is a few miles away." The Great Escape 2 started at Biggin Hill airport on June 4 and took in 12 countries, with stops at significant locations in the story that inspired the 1963 film. Team leader Peter Spowage is pictured before departure at Biggin Hill airport.
