Biggin Hill’s St George’s RAF Chapel welcomes many overseas visitors but relatively few from the area. Read on to learn more about the attraction that’s right on your doorstep. THE Royal Air Force (RAF) may have departed Biggin Hill 19 years ago but one small plot remains as a tribute to The Few and those RAF crews who worked to keep Britain safe during World War II as well as the 454 Allied aircrew who gave their lives while stationed at Biggin Hill. The St George’s RAF Chapel of Remembrance sits on Main Road, Biggin Hill in still and quiet tribute to those men and woman who flew the aircraft, maintained the aircraft, plotted the Battle and maintained the communication links that kept RAF Biggin Hill at the front-line in the Battle of Britain, defending Britain until VE-Day in 1945. Curator Laurie Chester, one of two part-time
curators, welcomes visitors to the chapel, open daily, from around the world yet is surprised that many local residents fail to visit the site. He says: “Many people pass on the road but feel

they cannot come in. They think this is an official air base and they are not allowed in. This is completely wrong as we are open to everyone and I would invite all local residents to visit.” The chapel holds two religious services during the
week, a Roman Catholic mass on Saturdays and an Anglican service on Sundays, which are open to members of the public. The chapel can hold 72 worshippers during normal
