services but can increase this to around 250 during special occasions such as Remembrance Day services. The visitor is immediately struck that the chapel is a living building, as relevant to today’s RAF as it was sixty years ago. The 12 stained glass windows in the main chapel were installed in 1955 at a cost of £250 each. They each represent an RAF squadron stationed at Biggin Hill during the war. Laurie and fellow curator Mick Case serve one week on, one week off at the chapel, to maintain it and to welcome the many visitors the building attracts from around the world. Laurie says: “We have around 8,000 visitors each

year, including many local schools that bring children here. Our visitors come from almost every country and often visit because they were in the RAF or perhaps their parents or grandparents were.” Two replica Battle of Britain aircraft, a Hurricane and

Spitfire, stand guard outside the gates, in a further memorial to those who served at Biggin Hill. A memorial garden on the side of the chapel adds to the calm of the chapel. Inside, the noise of the traffic is muted, allowing full appreciation of the memorials to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for Britain as well as those who played their part at the base and survived. • Visitors are welcome daily between 11am and 4pm.
