The distance was slightly longer than the normal top to
bottom route taken by cyclists as the group took the opportunity to call in on the charity’s headquarters in Stockton, Teeside. “We planned our route through Fort William, which is the
traditional route,” James explained. “However, we detoured to the charity’s headquarters in the North East to call in. It meant we zigzagged our way down the country. We stayed at B&Bs and with friends and family to keep our costs down in order to raise the most money for the charity.” James reveals that he only had two months’ notice of the
fundraising effort when he was asked by the ride’s organiser and that his choice of bicycle was a surprising one given the arduous conditions likely to be met en route. He says: “I bought a bike off eBay for £80. It was a mongrel bike but stood up to the test.” So far James and his friends at the University of Kent (Canterbury), Jamie Harris, James Southward, Josh Bounds and Dan Griffiths, have already raised a significant sum through JustGiving. He says: “We have raised around £1,500 for Lionsraw. We intend to continue fundraising efforts for this worthwhile charity. It is a continuing effort and we have more ideas. For instance, at a recent music festival at university we made a collection. One idea for the future is a ‘100 miles in 100 hours’ event, back to back marathons by four runners.” Lionsraw founder and managing director Jon Burns paid tribute to the efforts of the five cyclists. He says: “Lionsraw is excited that radical young people are doing crazy things for people they’ve never met. James and his friends have worked so hard to raise money to finish the project we started in Durban last year.” To make a donation, visit:
