Simplifying a Healthy New Year

by Nancy Mahon

you need to gradually build new skills into lifelong practices. Here are some simple ways to start.

Create a specific resolution. “I want to be healthier” is too general. Try this one instead: “I

want to be healthier because I can then (insert physical goal here).” Now you have a destination.

Learn what you should have in the kitchen before January 1st. Attend a food lecture with a

health counselor or nutritionist. Learn which staples you always should have on hand in your kitchen and how those ingredients can expand your cooking repertoire. Whether your goal is to low- er cholesterol, reduce sugar cravings, relieve menopause symptoms or have clearer skin, when you have specific goals, a health counselor or nutritionist can guide you to make the right food choices to help attain them.

Clear out the pantry and cup- boards of unhealthy and expired foods. Take whatever is still good

to your local food shelter. Enjoy dis- covering new foods as you restock the pantry.

Think realistically about exercise. What is close by? Do you feel comfortable in the space? Do the

re you ready to improve your health habits this coming year? To create those healthy habits,

times work for you? Are you excited by the type of exercise? If not, chances are you will not go very often, no matter what you already have paid for mem- bership. Make it a point to find a place where you feel relaxed and enthusias- tic. Yoga and Pilates studios or personal training studios will work well for indi- viduals who then can become educated through personal instruction with a small student/teacher ratio. Again, hav- ing specific fitness goals will enhance the experience and the results.

Subscribe to a health magazine. Each month it will reinforce what you are doing

Speak of your goals in present tense. Say “I cut back a lot on (insert food or habit here)” rather

than “I am trying to cut back.” Health goals should

be a few small parts working together. Invest in yourself now so that come January you are ready with knowledge, a clear vision and a healthy kitchen.
