PRODUCT ANATOMY ARRI ALEXA M

The Arri Alexa M is designed for action, aerial photography and 3D productions. It features the same sensor and image processing as the Alexa, but the head and body of the M are connected via fi bre-optic cable, which, in a hybrid form, can also be used for powering the head.

Arri says it has received dozens of

pre-orders from leading camera and rental companies, as well as numerous calls from producers and directors asking about the camera’s availability for shoots that need a camera for small spaces and unusual angles.

To accommodate access to awkward cor-

ners, the camera manufacturer has devel- oped a frame with screw holes to facilitate fi tting in various ways. Arri also plans to include an option for a 4 x 3 sensor and for the head to dock to the body to form a single unit.

CINEMATIC LOOK

The body provides various options for recording images, sound and metadata, accommodating as many different workfl ows as the standard Alexa. Arri says it offers a fi lm-like, organic look with extended, clean highlights, extremely low noise fl oor, natural skin tones and a cinematic depth of fi eld. It offers wide exposure latitude of 14 stops and EI 800 base sensitivity (EI 160 to EI 3200) for sharp, natural images for uncompressed RAW, 2K and HD workfl ows.

OPERATION

The display includes surround view, false colour exposure check and peaking focus check. Camera operators can also compare a stored image with a live image. The camera includes gold mount or V-lock on-board batteries and 12v or 24v power inputs and outputs, as well as support for third-party on-board recorders.
