Broadcast TECH APPOINTMENTS LENZ QUITS BSKYB FOR ASTRO


BSkyB director of product design and product development Brian Lenz is leaving the broadcaster to take on the position of chief innova- tion officer at satellite broadcaster Astro Malaysia. In his new role, in which he will


report directly to the chief execu- tive, Lenz will be responsible for products, strategy, business devel- opment and technology.


“It’s an expansion opportunity for me,” Lenz told Broadcast. “I love Sky and everything that I have been able to do here, but it is fundamentally about a life experience opportunity. The move will give me a chance to go to a place that has the same sort of forward-thinking culture as Sky and that has been successful and thrives on moving forward and expanding horizons.” Astro Malaysia provides DTH, IPTV and over-the-top pay-TV


to 3 million customers in Malaysia, as well as running multiple Malaysian pay-TV channels across entertainment, sports and movies. MEASAT Broadcast Network Systems, Astro’s parent company, also has pay-TV operations in India and Saudi Arabia. Lenz starts with Astro Malaysia on 1 December.


AINE HEALY PFT Prime Focus Technologies (PFT) has appointed Aine Healy to the role of vice-


president and head of UK. Based at PFT’s London facility, Aine will lead the digital content services provider’s sales, opera- tions, technology and strategic business development efforts in the UK. Healy has spent the past decade as chief executive of Intermission Studio, a digital facility she founded in Ireland. Prior to that, she was broad- band studio manager at Eircom, operations manager at TV3, and head of transmission at Tara Television.

Ganesh Sankaran described the UK as a key market for PFT. He said: “Aine’s background and entrepreneurial experience as a founder and chief executive give her vital insider insight into the challenges the media and entertainment industry faces, and a deep understand- ing of the evolution it is going through.”


SIMON COX PROCAM Simon Cox, previously camera facili- ties manager at Twofour Broadcast, has


joined Procam as camera facili- ties manager. As one of Two-


four’s preferred suppliers, Cox has worked closely with Procam and says that a client-side and production background will give him valuable experience and understanding. “With the Olym- pics in everyone’s sights, 2012 looks to be an even busier time for the company and I am thrilled that I will be a part of that,” Cox said.


BRENDAN MALLON UTV UTV has appointed Brendan Mallon to the role of head of resources.


Mallon joins UTV from BBC Scotland, where he was opera- tions manager and technical development manager. In his new role, he will have overall responsibility for UTV Televi- sion’s technical and production facilities. Mallon said: “A major part of my role will be to ensure that UTV develops the right blend of skills and new tech- nology, so that we continue to deliver the compelling content the UTV audience expects.”


MARK SMITH ITV


ITV has appointed former BBC global iPlayer launch director Mark Smith to


the role of director of architec- ture and integration. Smith, who will report to chief technol- ogy officer Paul Dale, will join ITV’s central technology man- agement team, where he will be responsible for the design and build of ITV’s next-generation infrastructure.


JOHN SEARS ARGOSY Argosy has appointed John Sears to the role of senior field sales engi- neer. Reporting


to sales director Chris Smeeton, he will be responsible for sup- porting key customers in the south of England and driving Argosy’s growth in the region. Sears joins the supplier of broad- cast cables and studio infrastruc- ture products from camera power and lighting specialist PAG, where he managed its net- work of European distributors and was responsible for interna- tional sales and distribution. “John brings a wealth of broad- cast experience to the company and is an important addition to our business,” said Smeeton.


DAVID DOWLING ROSS David Dowling has been appointed director of sales for Europe at Ross Video.


Dowling will direct the regional sales team and manage Ross’ growth in European markets as part of the company’s ongoing European expansion. Most recently, Dowling was general manager and sales director for Orad’s UK operations. Prior to that, he was at Snell & Wilcox, where he looked after business development in the UK and Nor- dic regions, and channel man- agement in the UK. He has also worked as a reseller and systems integrator with Altered Images, representing a broad range of products from companies such as Sony, Avid and Panasonic.
