PRODUCT NEWS AVID UPDATES MEDIA COMPOSER

The latest version of Avid’s editing software Media Composer has been rebuilt to make it a 64-bit application. Avid marketing manager, professional

segment, Angus Mackay said Media Composer 6, which will have its UK debut at BVE North, addressed customer requests. “At a high level, it brings us to a place where Media Composer is as open, fast and modern as it can be. “This version has been rebuilt from its core

and, as it is 64-bit, it can access more RAM and is able to work at a much higher level, so it increases the number of streams and increases complexity while maintaining performance.”

BLACKMAGIC LAUNCHES RESOLVE 8.1

Blackmagic Design has launched the latest version of its DaVinci Resolve software, which now includes support for Apple Final Cut Pro X XML round trip. Users of Resolve 8.1 can import and

export Final Cut Pro X timelines using the new Final Cut Pro rich XML file format. When working in FCPX, users get full timeline round trip so that projects can be moved between Final Cut Pro X and DaVinci Resolve. Blackmagic said it will allow users

to retain multi-track timelines with frame-accurate cuts, dissolves and speed changes. DaVinci Resolve will also use rich XML from Final Cut Pro X to link to original camera footage. The grading software is also compat- ible with Avid AAF for round trip with Avid Media Composer. The AAF support includes effects such as dip to colour, edge and centre wipe with border, clock and venetian blind wipe, and also cross, oval and diamond iris wipe.

Mackay also drew attention to the inter-

operability of the software with third-party hardware, with AJA, Blackmagic, BlueFish, Matrox (below) and MOTU signed up to the company’s development programme. There is “beefed-up” audio functionality,

with surround sound and multiple round track support for 5.1 and 7.1. The software also has a tabbed interface, rather than separate windows for bins, and effects control has been brought together into one window for “a more contemporary way of working”. The software will begin shipping on 15

November, with Media Composer 6 and Newscutter both priced at £1,714. Symphony version 6 will cost £4,115, while Nitris DX will cost £3,772. Upgrades start from £205.
