CASE STUDY A PLATFORM FOR PLAYOUT

The Harris Selenio, the industry’s fi rst integrated media convergence platform, is ideal for hybrid environments and offers a time-saving, cost-effective and future-proof system for broadcasters

employ the Harris Selenio media convergence platform is Sweden’s Mediatec Broadcast. As one of Europe’s leading outside broadcast companies, Mediatec is using Selenio as its video head-end (VHE) solu- tion for two HD IPTV channels that play out from its regional facility in Helsinki, Finland. The Helsinki operation – one of

three Scandinavian master-control facilities operated by Mediatec – provides HD encoding and playout services for news, current affairs and entertainment, as well as a sepa- rate movie channel broadcast by one of Finland’s leading private commer- cial broadcasters. Mediatec will also install a Harris

which will signifi cantly reduce main- tenance requirements and minimise rack-space requirements within the master-control environment. “This is the initial phase of our

investment plans for VHE solutions within Mediatec operations that will move us towards a consolidated approach,” says Andreas Langell, manager, contribution and distribu- tion services, at Mediatec Broadcast Sweden. “We have a range of encod- ing and playout solutions to support eight additional sports pay-per-view channels in Scandinavia. We hope to eventually use Selenio as the common platform for all encoding and playout requirements across our network.” First introduced in Feb-

platform. Ideal for hybrid environ- ments, Selenio combines traditional baseband video and audio process- ing, video and audio compression and IP networking technology into a single platform.

Ultra effi cient Selenio is fl exible and modular, mak- ing it suitable for any fi xed or mobile production environment, broadcast facility or digital terrestrial redistri- bution head end (DVB-T/T2, ATSC, M/H, ISDB-T), as well as cable, satel- lite and IPTV head ends. Based on proven Harris compres- sion, networking and processing technology, it provides a space- saving, energy-effi cient solution that enables service providers to support content from multiple sources and deliver it over multiple platforms. Capable of supporting IP and baseband signals, Selenio utilises an ultra-compact, energy-effi cient 3RU modular chassis with 14 hot-swap- pable slots that are useful for com- bining multiple workfl ow functions in a broadcast or new media environment.
