PRODUCT NEWS Canon targets high-end production

Canon has made a play for the high-end TV and film production market with the launch of its Cinema EOS C300 camera and a new series of EF and PL mount lenses. The EOS C300, unveiled at the start of

November, is available in two models – EF or PL mount – and has an 8.3 megapixel Super 35mm sensor, which provides 12 stops of latitude. Canon said the camera shoots at 1080p

rather than 4K because “1080p is now the most commonly used and sought-after shoot- ing and delivery size for productions” and that it will allow “seamless” integration into pro- duction pipelines. Imaging Technologies and Communica-

tions Group senior director Laurence Thorpe said the sensor provides “high sensitiv- ity, low noise and reduced rolling shutter distortion”, together with “unrivalled low- light performance”. As well as MPEG-2 full-HD compression,

the camera employs 422 colour sampling with a maximum recording rate of 50Mbps. It is equipped with two Compact Flash card

slots for simultaneous recording to two mem- ory cards.

EOS C300: ‘high sensitivity, low noise and unrivalled low-light performance’ The camera is also compatible with Canon’s

WFT-E6B wireless file transmitter, which allows it to be remotely controlled by a smart- phone or tablet. Canon said both versions of the camera

would have a list price of $20,000 (£12,485), with an estimated delivery date of the end of

January for the EF mount camera and March for the PL version. The seven new 4K EF lenses, together with

Canon’s current range of SLR EF lenses, will form the core of its new Cinema EOS system, the company said. The new lenses cover a zoom range of 14.5mm to 300mm.

Red ends three-year wait with Scarlet-X launch

Red has released its 4K Scarlet-X camera three years after the device was first unveiled. It is the third camera from the US manufac-

turer, with the compact design expected to appeal to a similar market to Canon’s EOS C300 (above), which launched on the same day in the US earlier this month. The Red camera has a 14-megapixel sensor

with a dynamic range of 13.5 stops and up to 18 stops with HDRx. It offers burst modes up to 12fps at full 5K resolution alongside 4K motion capture from 1fps to 30fps. Scarlet-X can accommodate Canon’s EF or

PL mount lenses via the camera’s interchange- able lens mount system. Panavision, Anamor- phic and Nikon lenses are also compatible with the device. Red has started taking orders for the cam-

era, with the first units to ship from 17 Novem- ber. It is priced at $9,750 (£6,080).

‘ASICs that weren’t fast enough for Epic just became a gold mine for

Scarlet’ Red

4K Scarlet-X: reduced cost of processing power allows Red to offer camera at lower price than Epic Red said the reason it is $48,250 (£30,120)

less than its Epic camera is because of the reduction in costs associated with data rates and processing power. “ASICs that weren’t fast

enough for Epic just became a gold mine for Scarlet. This, and board component reduction, allows us to lower the data rate throughput and significantly reduce our costs over volume.”
