Broadcast TECH In association with
VHE environment, Selenio is ideal for combining specialised cards for encoders, multiplexers, DVB-T2 adaptation and embedded control and supervision. In the Mediatec application, the
Selenio system features three encoder cards: one for each broadcast channel and another for back-up services. Operational benefi ts of the Selenio platform include intelligent, effi cient management of both IP, compressed and baseband signals, reduced control complexity, simple deployment and increased functionality in a smaller footprint. The unique, high-density, modular architecture lowers the total cost of ownership by reducing installa- tion, maintenance and upgrade costs. Based on the proven, cost-effective
technology of the Videotek VTM Series, the VTM4140 is an easy- to-operate tool for monitoring and measuring HD-SDI (1080 and 720 lines) and SD-SDI (525 and 625 lines) signals on any XGA-capable DVI monitor. The output display includes video picture, waveform, vector and alarm status or optional audio — each in one quadrant of the screen or any element in a full-screen view. At this year’s IBC, Harris unveiled new compression and networking features for Selenio that greatly aug- ment its video contribution capabili- ties and software-enabled support for the DVB-T2 digital transmission standard. Harris has also added linear frame-rate conversion for baseband applications, as well as simplifying confi guration and usabil- ity through an even slicker and more intuitive user interface. “Selenio offers an innovative
design at its foundation that will ena- ble us to improve ease of use, sim- plify integration and lower the total cost of ownership for our customers,” says Harris Morris, president, Harris Broadcast Communications. “The global feedback since its launch aligns directly with the core

value propositions of Selenio: saving time, money and effort today, and providing a fl exible, future-proof solution to meet many requirements moving forward.” The new 10-bit, H.264 4:2:2-capa- ble contribution encoder integrated within Selenio provides multiple- generation encoding without the signal degradation that comes from repeatedly compressing and decom- pressing signals. The contribution encoder will signifi cantly reduce latency, giving broadcasters, satellite providers, mobile production com- panies and other customers a highly advanced, comprehensive and high- performance encoding portfolio.
DVB-T2-ready At IBC, Harris also demonstrated how Selenio is capable of helping broadcasters establish a cost-effective, compact and fully functional DVB-T/ T2 VHE in a single box. Selenio now includes a built-in DVB-T2 Gateway solution featuring an integrated single- frequency network (SFN) adapter, enabling Harris to supply a complete DVB-T2 solution with DTV transmit- ters, the VHE, and Harris Videotek test and measurement equipment.

to maximise operational effi ciency. This is illustrated by its built-in, graphically rich web-based interface for easy confi guration, monitoring and management. User interface software enhancements include simplifying how customers set up connections by graphically mapping out each link in a ‘block’ approach, and highlighting how video is routed through the frame. Selenio, meanwhile, retains all the
valuable customer features that have professionals taking notice around the world. This includes support of MPEG-2 and H.264 compression standards for SD, HD, 3 Gbps and mobile, and support for virtually any advanced audio capability on a single module — including best-in- class loudness control. Operational benefi ts include intelligent, effi cient management of IP, compressed and baseband signals, reduced control complexity, simple deployment and increased functionality in a space- saving, energy-effi cient footprint.
