INDULGENCES eating out by tony reverditto

Deck 33 In 1987, entrepreneur Chip Conley founded the San

Francisco-based Joie de Vivre (carefree enjoyment of life) known for creating innovative hospitality services. He loves designing one-of-a-kind boutique hotels, restaurants and spas. Currently they have 30 boutique hotels in operation and this past July they refreshed the Custom Hotel and added a wonderful restaurant called Deck 33, nestled on the outskirts of LAX. It is an ideal destination for travelers, business guests and So Cal residents as it is just minutes from West L.A.’s beach communities. As we approached the hotel, I don’t know quite how

to explain it, but I got this “Twilight Zonesque” feeling. It’s placed in such a strange part of town (near the LAX) but the building itself is intriguing. As we entered the squeaky clean and quite modern hotel, armed with a staff clad in 1960s airline inspired uniforms, the women in sleek blouses and pencil skirts, and the men in opened collar dress shirts with pin-striped detailing. Very timely, with the debut of the new ABC series, Pan Am, which is reviving retro chic from the same era. The new décor includes a unique LED lighting system installed in the windows in which guests can personalize their rooms with mood-appropriate colors. Floor to floor, there are different color and graphic pattern designs and unique artwork in both the rooms and hallways.
