rage notes TIME

JUST KEEPS MOVING ON . . .

It’s the one thing in life that we have absolutely no control over—the fact that time passes. You can

fight the concept, rail against its occurrence, work to not let it show in your life and on your body, but girlfriend there is absolutely nothing you can do to stop it. I was so saddened by the tragic suicide of Jeremy Rodemeyer last month, especially in the light

of his hope filled message on the “It Gets Better” website. His kind and supportive words for those seeking comfort were insightful and for those of us grown, a reminder that while it gets better, the pain of that particular type of loneliness is so profound, that one can’t always see that in time, it will pass. Can we ever come to a place, when fearing what we don’t understand does not result in derision and cruelty? I’m not sure it will ever be gone 100 percent, but I hope so. In the mean time, make sure to reach out to each other and pay attention; you never know whose life can be changed in a moment by offering a simple, kind word or gesture. It did for me and it made it so much better. I loved chatting with Jason Stuart (page 44-49) while we did our fashion shoot for October. We

are of similar age and had some of the same experiences growing up gay in a not-so-friendly atmo- sphere—each coping in different ways. He turned to comedy, making his experiences into a success- ful career, in many ways laughing in the face of oppression. His humor and more importantly finding his voice helped him grow beyond those experiences, turning lemons in to lemonade so to speak—it got better. I was also struck by another success story ink.d. lang (see page 36). I have followed her career from

its early days, when the music industry didn’t quite know what to do with her unique style. An irrefut- ably gifted performer, she defied all genre and blazed a trail through an industry and society who feared her “uniqueness,” to become a part of music history. Her gift shined through any adversity she encountered and her sweetness and humility allows us to enjoy someone truly human. She made it better. Our article on page 34 talks about the confusing changes in the tax codes because of conflicting

DOMA and state laws around gay marriage and domestic partnerships. It is another example of time passing and times changing—and how little control we have over how it occurs—only our reaction to it. We have been fighting this marriage fight for so long and it seems at times that so little has changed. The tax code kerfuffle is a symptom of something altered, in spite of all of the hostility we experience from those who basically fear what we represent (change), we are now a part of the debate on deeper and deeper levels, shifting not only law, but society on the whole. Like most things that are happening in the moment, they seem to be the most important things in

life, significant in their immediacy because they are the only thing one can see. Perspective teaches, that more often than not the experiences are fleeting. Remembering that, even in the worst mo- ments, that change is working its magic, making it better over the long haul—is difficult to say the least—but not impossible..
