SPOTLIGHT

the CD title track he wrote called “Sing It Loud?” We’ve been friends about two years now and I think he wrote that song for his niece.

Watching his niece grow up and feeling like she had a great sense of self, even at two or three years old. When I heard the song, to me it sounded like a nice theme or an anthem for people who are individuals. People who feel the confidence to be able to live their life the way they want to and choose to as an individual. I just thought it was a great anthem for people with confidence. Definitely. You seem like the type of person who I could play darts with, have a couple of beers and just shoot the breeze. Is that an accurate representation of some casual time for you? It depends. If you’re a good dart player, then I’m not gonna play with you (laughter).

Fair to midland. [k.d. laughs again] I’m pretty casual. I’m not a big social person. I don’t like to… I’m kind of low key and

private. I’m pretty easygoing though. I interviewed Dave Koz recently and when I asked him, “Which female vocalist would he most like to make an album with” and he said, “Hands down, k.d. lang.” Well, that’s nice. That’s sweet.

OnSing it Loud, there’s a song called “Habit of Mind.” I can totally relate to the lyrics of self-examina- tion and realizing that there is still hope. What’s the meaning of that song for you? Yeah, it’s definitely a self-examination and sort of seeing the habitual patterns that

we get ourselves into. Realizing that you’re in the driver’s seat and you can change your habits and your patterns, if you’re aware of them. There’s a lyric you sing in the song, “Sugar Buzz” and you really nail it vocally when you sing, “You’ve got me wound up tight as I can be.” I know hearing music is different for everyone. I heard touches of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones in the sounds of that song. Oh great! Why not?

When you sang that lyric, was that a “one-take” wonder? When we first recorded that song, I did a vocal that pretty much mapped out the

direction of the vocals while we were tracking it. That line is not the original tracking vocal but it’s a very close copy of the tracking vocals. When I track a vocal with the band, it’s important that I take chances and establish sort of flexibility in the freedom that I want the band to have. I try to let myself make mistakes and take left turns and so forth when we’re tracking, so I can get that same sort of response from the band. What are some of your feelings on theSing It Loud tour so far? It’s been fantastic. It’s been extremely rewarding. It’s been really fun. The band has

the same respect and joy every single night for the music. The band and the music always transpose me to a better place. I hope that the love and the happiness translate to the audience because the band and I are having a great time.
