SPOTLIGHT

Now, filming love scenes, from what I’ve heard… is not the most comfortable aspect of acting. I thought the director did the scenes sensually. What comes to mind for you, thinking back when you created those parts of the film? We were all very shy about the whole thing. We were

all a bit embarrassed. To be quite physically active, shall we say, none of us had done so. The person who was most embarrassed was the director, Andrew. He spent most of the love scene’s shoot with a towel over his head. So, he didn’t see anything! (Laughter) We made a deal; Andrew made an assurance that he would film it very quickly and Tom and I made a deal that we would just “get on with it” [Tom Cullen is a straight actor] and we’d NEVER talk about it ever again! That was kind of a good way of working with it, you know? We said, “This is the way the job went and a bit of the job, so we just have to do it.” There is a short bit in the film where you both ride a bicycle together. Maybe, that was harder than the love scenes? (Laughter) That was very difficult to do, actually. Partly because, we filmed a lot of it… we didn’t shut down any streets or do anything. We would literally just turn up somewhere, get the camera out and just do it. So, a lot of the people who you see in the film or in the background, they’re not extras… they are real people walking by. We were actually quite abused by a lot of people! (Laughter) In the shot, where I’m riding on the back of the bike

and Tom’s pedaling, there’s actually a car full of slightly aggressive males at the end of the street, who I think, shouted something like, “faggot.” It was as we rode past and I think, Andrew kept it in the film. Yes, I wondered, “How many takes would it take for you to get on the back of that bike.” I don’t know where the idea came from. I don’t remem-

ber if it was in the script or if we did it just momentarily. I’d have to look back at the script because there are a lot of moments in the film that we just came up with, when we were shooting. They just complemented what Andrew had written. There has been such an evolution of gays in cinema over the past several years. What would you say to someone if they asked, “Why should I see this film?” I think one of the most attractive elements of the film,

that strikes people most… is because it’s so simple, or seemingly so simple, it really packs a punch. It’s been amazing to watch very different audiences watch it. I mean, we’ve had screenings all over America and the American audiences have been very enthusiastic for it. The film seems to cut through all these gay themes. I sup- pose you don’t have to be an alien from another world to understand. There’s no reason why, any human on earth could not understand this film. That’s the strongest element. It’s not a “gay” film, it’s a human film. I totally agree. Thanks a lot Chris. Thank you for your time.
