the workplace. By gaining a better understand- ing of your preferred communication style as well as the others on your team, you can build a better communication system. This impacts your relationship with others and down the road can ultimately impact productivity as well. (Check out UNC Charlotte’s “Communication Strategies one- day class.) In addition, communicate positively and openly with others. This will make others feel valued and respected. It’s through open communication that each member of the work group understands how they fit into the unit and how they impact where it is going.

Build a team approach. One of our basic human needs is to feel we belong to something

bigger than ourselves, and for many people that need is met by being part of a supportive work group. This unity will help your team members feel appreciated and that they belong. As a result they will want to be at work, tardiness and absenteeism will be minimal, your team will function smoothly and your unit will be better able to carry out the missions and goals of your organization.

Improve motivation for

yourself and others. If you have a positive attitude about achieving goals and success in general, you will be much more motivated to take action. If you look at what you would like to accomplish and you see only the obstacles, your motivation diminishes pretty quickly. Ask yourself what might spur you to action. Create goals in smaller chunks that can be easily achieved. This will keep you on track and moti- vated to keep moving.

Go big or go home. I love this saying! It says it all. You have

to give 110% of yourself every day. Not every work environment is ideal but you can change it and make it

better a little at a time. Make a concerted effort to bring your positive attitude to work every day. When things get tough, remember to breathe and look for the positive in every situation.

Give Recognition and

Appreciation. Whenever you can, “catch people being good” and make sure they and others know about it. Give recognition and ap- preciation to everyone at every opportunity and make it as personal and specific as possible. This kind of feedback is priceless.

Provide a Positive Physical

Environment. If at all possible insure that the physical environment on your workplace is clean, bright, attractive and cheerful. Make sure
