NATIONAL ALL BREEDS SHOW

Seaton Farms of Audlem, Cheshire, provided the show’s Honourable Mention, a contrast in both colour, being mainly white, and in stature to the Champion and Reserve. This was the tallest cow on show, the seven-year-old Styche Lyster Sally EX95, a 14,858 kg 305 day 3.85% fat 3.2% protein (1041 CFP) producer now in her fi fth lactation. Sally’s dam is the EX93 Styche Jolt Sally from Grantchester Prelude Special EX95, herself out of an imported Valiant daughter that traces back through Romandale to Don Augur in Maine, USA. In their class, Sally shaded the Best Udder winner Corringham Bob Roxy Red, who won the Best Red & White title, from an English, Irish and Welsh partnership based at Riverdane. Now EX93 and with an EX94 twin sister, Bob Roxy is backed by seven generations, of which fi ve are EX and two VG, and her second lactation was 13,790 kg 305 days 4.8% fat 3.4% protein (1128 CFP).

Also pulled in for consideration in the Championship was the familiar Huddlesford Mrs Melody that has won the Senior Cows for Wyndford Farms, giving them their second in milk class winner. Making up the fi fth cow in the climax for Champion was Paul Findlay’s Bestfed Golden Countess that placed second to Richaven’s Reserve Champion and she had many admirers.

All the way from the Isle of Wight was the Reserve Best Red & White, Crockers Rock Stocking VG87, the fourth prize senior heifer in milk and recently Champion at the New Forest Show for her breeders Paul and Mary Bradley. Now owned in partnership with Richaven, Stocking has three EX dams, the third one being bred at Crichel. Goldwyn’s impact on the Show was clearly evident with three milking class winners and three second prize milkers plus both the Junior and Reserve Junior Champions. Shottle again sired the Best by a UK Sire, Mooshard Shottle Tellar that placed fourth in the day’s best turnout, the Intermediate Cows. To cap the fi rst day’s youngstock classes, it was decided to have, for the fi rst time, the judging of the in milk heifers to avoid overstocking their udders. Most surprisingly, over 25% of the in milk entry trooped into the ring as 17 Junior Heifers made their debut. One of these dazzled all her opponents; Berryholme Goldwyn Flo VG86, calved in February and still

giving 36 kg daily. Flo’s maternal sister was last year’s National Champion and her three direct dams average 94 points so it’s no wonder she wowed the Interbred judges with a near perfect score of 49 points. Following Flo all the way to her Heifer Championship was the second Junior Heifer, Wyndford Goldwyn Erle that also took Best Udder in class from her taller rival. Again her pedigree explained much of this, her dam being Field of Dreams Formation Erle, the 2003 NHS Reserve Champion behind Holmland Storm Flo, so the late Ian Montgomery’s judgement eight years previous still holds true. Erle may still smile as she was probably the only animal at the show backed by a pair of EX95 cows that were both NHS Reserve Champions! Wyndford Farms had the Reserve Championship for Heifers well covered as they also had the winning Senior Heifer in Wyndford Atlas Winsome 82, a third generation VG. She took Best Udder in a class of 12 heifers and was a keystone in securing both Senior Premier Breeder and Exhibitor banners for Wyndford ahead of Richaven. Second to Winsome was Scotland’s most successful exhibitor, Brian Yates, whose Logan prefi x produced two second prize winners that made the Championships. Five youngstock classes were well contested by 55 calves and heifers, beginning with the youngest group which heralded a new name taking the fi rst red rosette at this bold event.
